March 1, 1946-The Thayer boys beat New Salem, MA 30-15. The team's record improved to 9-4.
March 4, 1932-The Thayer boys competed in their first state tournament.
In Class C, Franklin beat Thayer 26-18 at the University of New Hampshire.
Thayer was coached by Ernest Barnes.
March 4, 1968-The Thayer boys defeated Raymond 73-56 in a second round game of the Class S state basketball tournament.
Thayer led 57-55 with only a few minutes left in the game, but they closed out the Rams with a 16-1 run to finish the game.
Gary Hamlin led Thayer with 22 points. Mike Turant scored 16, and Larry Zabielski scored 10. Thayer was coached by
Tony Santos.
March 8, 1934-The Thayer boys beat Troy 39-9 in the Winchester Town Hall.
Francis Barden was the high scorer with 13 point and Joe Zabielski scored 13.
March 10, 1950-The Thayer girls beat Charlemont, MA 28-12. Shirley Brayman led Thayer with 18 points.
Their Final season record was 16-1-1. They were Coached by Ken Arminio.
March 12, 1946-Princeton, MA beat Thayer 33-31 in the opening round of the 1946 Third Annual Tri-State
Basektball Tournament in Orange, MA. Chet Seroka scored 12 points and the Greenfield Recorder
Gazette praised the play of Phil Hyde and Joe Zack.
March 13, 1948-The Thayer boys beat Hardwick 42-38 in the quarterfinal round of the Tri-State
Tournament in Orange, MA. Chet Seroka was the leading scorer for Thayer with 16 points. Bob Barden
scored 13 points. Thayer set a tournament record by making 16 free throws in the game, breaking the
record of 14 set in the evening's opening contest by Brookfield, MA.
March 15, 1946-In the first game of the consolation bracket at the Tri-State Tournament in Orange,
MA, Thayer beat Powers Institute of Bernardston, MA 35-33. Chet Seroka was the high scorer for Thayer
with 16 points. Phil Hyde scored 13.
March 16, 1947-The Thayer boys beat New Salem, MA 34-23 in the opening round of the consolation
bracket of the Tri-State Tournament in Orange, MA. Chet Seroka led Thayer with 18 points and Joe
Zack scored 8.
March 19, 1947-Sanderson Academy of Ashfield, MA beat the 27-23 in overtime in the second round of the
consolation bracket of the Tri-State Tournament in Orange, MA. Thayer trailed with 54 seconds to play
in regulation, but John Budzik scored an outside shot to send the game to overtime. Thayer fans swarmed
the court and play was suspended until order was restored. Chet Seroka and Joe Zack were high scorers
for Thayer with six points each.
March 20, 1948-Brookfield, MA beat the Thayer boys 39-29 in the final game of the Tri-State Tournament
in Orange, MA. Chet Seroka and Bob Barden both scored 11 points for Thayer and they were named to
the all-tournament team.
March 22, 1946-The Thayer boys won the consolation bracket of the Tri-State Tournament in Orange, MA
by beating Hardwick 27-22. Phil Hyde scored 11 to lead all scorers. Hyde was named the Most
Outstanding Player of the Tournament.
March 23, 1954-The Winchester Kiwanis Club sponsored a banquet in the Hinsdale Elementary
School cafeteria for the Hinsdale and Winchester basketball teams. Coaches Phil Hyde and Gordon
Jacques and Principals Paul McNamara and Robert Girardin attended the banquet. Keene Teachers
College basketball coach, Sumner Joyce, was the guest speaker. A Greenfield Recorder-Gazette article
reports Bob "Hank" Qualters of Thayer led all scorers in the Tri-State area by averaging 22.8
points per game.
