Thayer Loses Best Buddy
July 2, 1931-April 8, 2005
A lifetime resident of Winchester, "Buddy" Baker played varsity sports at Thayer High School for five years. He played point guard on the varsity basketball team,
first and third base in baseball, and quarterback for the touch football
team. Although Thayer was eliminated in the first round of the the 1948 Class C basketball tournament,
Bud's skill and determination so impressed those running the tournament that they voted him
to the Utility position on the All-Tournament team. Bud was president of his class during his freshman
and sophomore years. He was voted the Most Versatile, Best Dancer, Most Comical, and Most Popular of the
Class of 1949.
Bud coached the Thayer boys varsity baseball team in the 1960's. He was a member and chair of the Winchester
School Board for many years. He was influential in the campaign for the construction of the
Winchester Gymnasium, which opened in 1975. Kendall "Bud" Baker died on Friday, April 8, 2005.
